Sick Kids gets anonymous donation for stem-cell research

02/26/07 -- CBC News - An anonymous donor has quietly given Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children $5.1 million for stem-cell research.

The private gift will focus on cancer-related stem-cell research, stem cells from adults, and
stem cells from human embryos, a controversial area of study.

Janet Rossant, the hospital's chief of research and a stem-cell scientist, told the Globe
and Mail she's excited about the donation because it will help researchers understand how
stem cells grow.

Private backing is a vital source of support for stem-cell research since government
funding alone is rarely enough, said Rossant.

The donation will be spread over the next five years.
